Virtual Reality and Audiovisual Reducing Pain and Anxiety During Colonoscopy: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Colonoscopy is a procedure performed to examine the digestive tract, such as the small intestine, large intestine, esophagus, rectum, and stomach. Providing virtual reality and audiovisual interventions is an effective treatment in reducing the patient's level of pain and anxiety. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness ofvirtual reality and audiovisual interventions in reducing the level of pain and anxiety of patients during colonoscopy procedures. The systematic review search used six databases from Scopus, ProsQuest, PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Springelinks. This systematic review search was taken from the last 10 years, namely from 2013–2022 usingEnglish with the search keywords virtual reality or audiovisual and pain and anxiety and colonoscopy. Assessed article bias and methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) critical appraisal checklist for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The total articles obtained were 1664 articles and as many as 14 articles that met the criteria for analysis. Audiovisual administration is given for 20-30 minutes and virtual reality is carried out for 5-12 minutes before and during the procedure. It has been proven effective in reducing pain and anxiety in patients with colonoscopy. Virtual reality and audiovisual are effective therapies in reducing pain and anxiety levels in patients. during colonoscopy.
