Spiritual Well-Being of Patients in the Intensive Care Unit

Abstract

Patients treated in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) are usually at risk of facing the end of life (death) and patients and their families often experience physical, psychosocial and spiritual stress which can affect spiritual well-being. Spiritual well-being is the process of describing the nature of the dynamic bond between a person and his creator, a fairly harmonious relationship depending on deliberate self-development, usually arising on the basis of compatibility. Between meaningful life experiences, goals and values. personal life values. This research uses a quantitative descriptive design. The sample in this study was purposive sampling, namely patients with full consciousness (Compos mentis) who were treated in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at RSUD Dr. Achmad Mochtar Bukittinggi as many as 96 people. This research was carried out by giving Ellison's questionnaire, namely the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), to patients  to determine their level of spiritual well-being. The results of this research were analyzed using univariate analysis. The results of the analysis showed that the majority of respondents had spiritual well-being in the high category (94.8%), were aged 65 years and over (29.2%), male (54.2%), had an education senior high school (42.7%), married (78.1%), had previous experience of being treated (70.8%), Muslim (100.0%), length of stay less than 5 days (88.5% ) and the diseases suffered by respondents were dominated by diseases of the cardiovascular system (37.5%). The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that patients treated in the ICU at Dr. Achmad Mochtar Bukittinggi has a good level of welfare. Suggestions require the role of nurses to pay more attention, especially to spiritual well-being, so that a more optimal level of spiritual well-being in ICU patients is realized.
